One is Dan Cochran, the other who bills him is access to a far greater total usable storage space. Four stars for the Infax!!!! Dan Wade ime, the first call to the driver will hang the system. No problem, just turn on the switch before you boot Pascal. No, Catalyst is not yet supported. The point of having the dual drive is easy backup. The point of re- movable media strain. There's plenty of documentation on installation, including Apple ][ emulation and CPM. But the documentation has some shortcomings in day to day procedures. One quirk I have found is that unless the unit is powered up at boot tnstallation was a breeze, except for fitting the 50 wire flat ribbon cable. I found that making a tight fold toward the front of the computer directly adjacent to the controller card allowed the ribbon to pass through the back access withoutem to be very fast. Also, if the disk is not accessed by the computer for a period of five minutes or so, the drive will shut that disk down. That's OK, because it comes back on line so quickly, and it keeps the drive running cool. Ihorizontal chrome plate (Bernoulli Principle). This motion of disk and air is said to ensure good magnetic performance but without actual physical contact. Head crash would seem impossible with this box. The spinning disk is stabilized and cushioned by force of air pressure against a larger than the ///, which is just fine because I don't want anyone moving it around. Single drive unit price is about $2,600, the double drive unit (or another daisy chainable single unit) for a thousand more. The cartridges seem reasonably destruct-proof, but we really haven't had them long enough to be sure. The Japanese method is to create a partnership between the two groups using feedback and job enrichment as a means of improving production and quality. While this is true as far as it goes, management and labor are onlyOQRSTUVWXYZ[\]^_`abrs like Apple and IBM. Apple has abandoned groups of consumers and thereby created an in- stability that is forcing the management and labor legs of the triangle to react. Unless Apple draws these people back into their consumer base, s shifted to someone like Franklin or to a Japanese maker trying to enter the American market. A 100,000 extra computer sales within a couple year period could make the difference to a newcomer in the industry, at the expense of oldtimeling if continuing production of the /// and Lisa would have made a difference with their present problems, but such actions can only mean difficulties in the future. Are a 100,000 ///ers enough to make a difference? They would if those salettuned to the consumer. They changed the Apple I and II several times in response to customer concerns. Recently though, Apple managerial and labor concerns have lead to chopping lengths off the consumer leg, just as IBM has. There is no telmedium size computer market that might capture some of the customers that IBM has "abandoned". We have all watched Apple follow IBM's lead in their relationship to the consumer leg of the triangle. In the beginning, Apple was closely a this hurt IBM? It could. It is reported that a significant percentage of System 34 users are not planning on "upgrading" to another IBM machine. For the first time in their long life they have several strong competitors in the week they announced that they were dropping support for System 34 programs, and operating systems. IBM's goal is to convert people to System 36 and 38, but in dropping 34 cold it has, in effect, cut a segment off its consumer base leg. Willuse they dominated the market and because the consumer had few other choices, IBM only had to consider the management and labor legs of its business triangle. Even today, it does business in the same manner that it did in the 60's. Lastneglected the consumer and now has to cut both labor and management legs to maintain stability with its consumer base. Now let us consider the computer industry. For a long time, and still today, the industry has been dominated by IBM. Beca weak management response of pursuing current profits at the expense of long term well being to visualize the potential instability of that triangle. The American auto industry maintained a near balance between management and labor but gle becomes unstable as does the business it represents. We have all seen examples where one leg became too powerful thereby destroying a company or industry. One only has to think of the strong labor position in the steel industry and theke pressure in any direction. When a business functions well, it balances all three functions: Management, labor and the consumer. If any of the three is allowed to expand, or shrink, without compensation from the others, then the trian two legs of a triangle necessary for success. The missing third leg or base of our triangle is the consumer. Visualize, if you will, a triangle where all three legs are of equal length. This is an exceptionally stable construct able to tathey are creating problems for the future. What Apple and IBM have to learn is how to bring new products into their line without losing their installed base of users. It is a difficult task, but only by maintaining that three legged balance can the companies prosper in the long run. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CATALYST TIP (.D1/SOS.INTERP) by DAN WADE: I have a unique program on my Catalyst menu, and one which I've found so o run will require some special driver or character set to run properly. You will have to determine this by referring to the documentation of the program or by trial and error. Special driver requirements might be .GRAFIX for graphics prograin Catalyst (temporarily), update the interps file and recalculate minimum load address. Then go back and delete the file and the temporary Catalyst entry. More about drivers and program specifics: It may be that the program you want to get an INTERP TOO BIG error using .D1/SOS.INTERP, you'll have to go thru some tricks to get things right. The approach would be to make a temporary Catalyst entry as follows: copy the big interpreter to the hard disk, manually install it the minimum interpreter load address, as you would have to remove your program disk to make room for the Catalyst disk. If you have Advanced Visicalc installed, you already have maximum space allocated for interpreters. If you ever d Initial prefix: .D1 8. Max files allowed open: 3 (see notes below) 9. Program path: (none) Escape out to the editor menu, and choose option 5 to update the INTERPS file. Choose to NOT recalculateisplay name: .D1/SOS.INTERP 2. Interpreter path: .D1/SOS.INTERP 3. Extra drivers: (see notes below) 4. Character set path: Default 5. Screen: Normal 6. Keyboard path: Default 7.rn. You will now be looking at the usual menu, but will be in edit mode. Scroll the cursor to the spot where you want the new entry to be, and press "A" to add an entry. The entry should be added with the following parameters: 1. Dst editor. Refer to the Catalyst documentation Chapter 3, page 5 "EDITING THE MENU" for additional information on editing. First, Edit the Calalyst Menu: From the main menu, select the Catalyst Editor, and the type 'E' or '1' and retue configuration, ie., the one that was loaded with Catalyst. Having hopefully convinced you of the benefits of this approach, the installation in the Catalyst main menu is accomplished by doing a "manual install" using the Catalyto the new disk, but if you do that, you run the risk of wiping out any special drivers that may have been supplied with it. So, with .D1/SOS.INTERP, you needn't be immediately concerned with drivers, as you'll be using your usual devicor example), you can "boot" it right away, without having to go through the tedium of setting up a new driver file. As you all know, getting the printer and other settings right is a pain. Of course you can just copy an existing driver file mes rarely prevent copying, but they do effectively prevent the owner from running the program in a convenient and useful manner. Another benefit from .D1/SOS.INTERP is that when you receive a new disk (from the TAU disk library fe Profile, using Catalyst auto-install or a manual installation? Well, there are still quite a few programs that won't install under Catalyst, the main reason being an unusual copy-locking scheme. Note that these special copy protection sche useful I thought I'd pass it on to you. The program? .D1/SOS.INTERP ! That's right, it's a generic selector, one that will run any boot disk in the internal drive. Now, you're probably wondering why not just put the program on thms, .RS232 for comm- unications programs, and .FMTDx drivers for formatting disks. If you need something special, simply edit the Catalyst menu and specify whatever is needed. Note that Catalyst finds its extra drivers in the CATALYST/SOS.DRIVER file on the hard disk, not from the disk in the internal drive. Sometimes a separate fontfile appears on the program disk. If so, specify the pathname when you set up parameter 4 in the Catalyst menu, eg., 4. Charaics to their version of SYSTEM.LIBRARY to run this. Also we have had problems that have been corrected by indicating that all "Save changes to disk?" responses require a lower case "y" for a yes answer. Otherwise, this program works well. Any subsequent re-boot will leave things. Limitations: 128K 3+2 or 3+2e (TITAN) system REQUIRED but NOT INCLUDED. RAM+3 will not work with 16K and 64K "3+2" systems. 16K and 64K "3+2" systems. PRESERVED OVER A RE-BOOT. Prior to first use the ramdisk must be formatted using system utilities. .RAM128F is an enhanced version of .RAM128. It is slightly larger (less than 2K) but includes an AUTOFORMAT facility. At first system boot the device automa copies. It is a large driver (13k+). .RAM128 is an extremely compact 128k capacity ramdisk driver which uses ONLY the ram onboard the 3+2 system. The driver itself is LESS THAN 1K in size.
