I couldn't get the darn thing to print out on my Epson RX-80! In fact, it was only configured for a tiny handful of printers, none of which were available to me. I'd get some terrific looking charts on my screen, and could do absolutely nothing with azine and is the dealer for Draw On ///, couldn't figure it out by phone. He too tried fiddling with the dip switches, but it made no difference. Finally, out of desperation, I decided to forget about this problem and do some pleasure reading. For ple We'll see! And sure enough, it did print Business Graphics charts - with stripes! Yes, stripes! What were these white stripes doing in the middle of my beautiful artwork?! Nobody seemed to know the answer. Even Bob Consorti, who publishes On Three Magn block on the printer driver, and that helped somewhat, but not entirely. Finally, I gave up. I needed to print out some charts for a report, so I shelled out some big bucks and bought Draw On ///, "guaranteed to print Business Graphics charts, etc..."unding all too familiar, and like something you don't want to hear again? Well, I'll make the rest short. Even using the Graftrax option, the printer would print some graph-like output, and then a few lines of garbage. I tried modifying the configuratiois a newer version of the MX-80 and automatically comes with Graftrax! I called my dealer to tell him this great tidbit I'd discovered, and he replied, "Oh, you mean I forgot to tell you?" So... what's five hours and a few grey hairs? Is this story soax?" What's Graftrax? Something you follow to catch giraffes in Africa? I don't know, I've never seen one. But I thought I'd give it a try - things couldn't possibly get any worse! Well, what do you know? The Graftrax option worked! It seems my RX-80 hes can make? I don't, but I'm sure I tried half of them! All to no avail... Like I said, I don't like to take no for an answer. Just to fool around, I tried commanding the program to print, not to an "Epson MX-80," but to an "Epson MX-80 with GraftrEpson! I called BPS in Massachusetts only to find that nobody there knew much about running their program on an Apple ///! They told me to play around with the dip switches, so I tried that too. Do you know how many millions of combinations 12 dip switc disk. Well, installation was no problem - you just needed to have two disc drives and an ability to read the English language. However, getting my "modified" program disk to work was another story. Print commands resulted in pages of garbage from my to print to an Epson printer. Great! Only one problem - they had lost their disk! I didn't really feel like paying BPS $75.00 for something a dealer could provide, so I scouted around and found Profit Plus, an outfit in San Rafael who still had the PIKc. I knew he'd come through! Through Computer Connection, I learned that Business and Professional Systems, Inc., the creators of Business Graphics, had come out with a "PIK program" ("Printer Installation Kit") that could actually alter my program diske, it can't be done!" But I didn't want to take "no" for an answer. I knew my /// could do it! I called a couple of dealers, and still, nothing but bad news. Finally, I called Computer Connection in downtown San Francisco, my last hope, and spoke to Eri them - except maybe take a photograph and show someone a slide presentation. But that's not what I wanted! I wanted to print these great looking graphs! Well, I called the previous user of the program (it was an office computer), and I was told, "Nopasure, I read the specs in the back of my manuals. So read the RX-80 manual I did, and the UPIC manual, and the Owner's Guide... and I found a clue! What was causing my "stripes" was that the printer was somehow not getting the seventh bit, so it was leaving a blank space all across the line. And the particular wire that carried the seventh bit from the UPIC to the printer was not connected properly! This hint came from the Business Graphics PIK program instructions, in section 3. So I drafted a friendy Pascal programs) without having to remember the pathname. To set it up see section 4 (Advanced Information) in the Catalyst 2.0 manual. This allows you to put your Basic programs on the hard disk and boot them from a menu also. To access this menu, you REPRINTED FROM THE ATUNC NEWSLETTER APRIL 1985 VOL 2 # 4 ****BASIC MENU WITHIN CATALYST**** For those of you with Catalyst, there is a feature that allows you to have a mini-menu beyond the main Catalyst menu to run your Basic programs (or similarlted everything from my screen onto my Epson RX-80. It was a complicated route, but it's a route worth taking in order to make the most out of a good program that's available for the Apple ///. According to the PIK manual, section 3.1, there is an error in the suggested wiring for Epson printers on page 8 of the UPIC manual. It should read as follows: Apple command "Write Screen MX80GRAFTRAX" - "Write Screen MX80" wouldn't work. I also needed to change the driver on my boot disk to the driver that was provided with the PIK program. But the program still printed garbage. The final change was in the wire craphics, have developed a "PIK" program (Printer Installation Kit) which will modify your program disk to address several different printers. In order to get Business Graphics to work with my Epson RX-80 (a newer version of the MX-80), I had to use the CE WITH EPSON RX-80 (technical info for above article) For those of you who own Business Graphics and felt that you could never print out your charts and graphs, here's some good news. Business and Professional Software, the creators of Business Gmodification, my Business Graphics charts were able to print out directly too! (Draw On /// made them nicer by adding textures and printing them in a smaller size.) I wouldn't have to sell my /// and get a Macintosh after all! BUSINESS GRAPHICS INTERFA who wasn't afraid of a soldering gun and we tried modifiying the wire. Eureka! My graphs printed out from Draw On ///! And they were so nice! All the little bits were right where they belonged! And not only did Draw On /// work, but with this wire r BASIC Startup Program on Catalyst should be as shown on page 4-1 of the Catalyst manual. Access to the menu program should be automatic with the Startup Program configured as shown. If it isn't, go into basic and type RUN .PROFILE/CATALYST/BMENU.EDITe to reconnect the 'broken' program lines, lines that are longer than 80 characters per line, a MAUG limitation. BUSINESS BASIC programs often have longer lines. Use the word processor to bring the lines together at the breaks. Apple Writer /// is excellennes at the very beginning and very end of the program that are accidents picked up while downloading from Compuserve. An example is the prompt, "Press RETURN to continue...". DO NOT REMOVE ANY PROGRAM LINES THAT HAPPEN TO BE BROKEN UP! Next, you will havence to 'fix' the ASCII file to be EXECuted. First, load the ASCII file into your word processor. The PASCAL editor is okay too. You have to do two operations on the text to make it able to be EXECuted. Next, look for any non-program lines, that is, liking on them easier. Unfortunately, once you have downloaded, you generally will have a lot of work to do. This is because MAUG's uploading requirements are not ideal for BUSINESS BASIC programs. It is best if you have had some BASIC programming experiyou did the download correctly, and got an ASCII file. All you ever have to do is open a recording file, 'READ' the file and store it, and then leave Compuserve. By the way, when downloading programs, ALWAYS use separate files for each program. SECTION 7 APPLE///: DL 7 The DL 7 data base (and all Compuserve data bases) store files in the ASCII format, which is kind of a common tongue for computers. If e 'Control-Z' to end the transmission. Just remember that lines in the program cannot be longer than 80 characters (In Basic, set OUTRECdirectory call GAMES and FOOTBAL uses various data files in the sub-directory called SCORE, then your Program Path would be ".PROFILE/GAMES/FOOTBALL" and the Initial Prefix would be ".PROFILE/SCORE" (PROBABLY RON WHITTEN) and provide the proper pathnames for your basic program. You will need to have previously saved the programs to the hard disk and know their Program Path and Initial Prefix. For example, if you have the program FOOTBAL stored on your Profile in a sub-t for this process. Lastly, store the file off in a new text file. Leave the word processor, and boot BUSINESS BASIC. At the command prompt, EXECute the file (e.g., EXEC .d1/access3.prg). The computer will read each line, tokenize it, and store it in memory. After it is done, the cursor prompt will reappear. I deleted .Audio, .Grafix, all four .FMTDs, and .Spoolstatus from my boot disk driver file, leaving me with 19K of memory left in SCP after reading in the drivers. To use the dynamic load feaiver. This driver file contains .Grafix, .Audio, .RS232, .Backup and other drivers that Quark thought the average /// user might load dynamically. You can read and work with a driver file with Systems Configuration Program (SCP) from Systems Utilities. I of saving memory by not always having to load every driver. .Grafix, for instance, uses 4.5K of memory. This was exactly what I wanted. When Catalyst 2.0 installed itself, it created a driver file with the full pathname of .Profile/Catalyst/SOS.Dro room and nothing else I could delete. I reread my Catalyst menu again and started asking Apple /// users questions. Dynamic loading means not all drivers must be present on SOS.Driver on your Catalyst boot disk. There was the additional advantagect I added so many drivers that I ended up deleting .Quarkcom and the six .Unused drivers to make more room. My system functioned just fine without these deleted drivers. The problem arose when I wanted to add the .Attach screen dump driver. There was n+-./01t altogether clear about how this dynamic loading worked. This article is about taking advantage of dynamic loading. SOS.Driver on my Catalyst boot disk kept growing. I added Quark's Discourse spooler drivers, then On Three's .OnTime driver. Then select item 1, Edit Catalyst Menu and place the cursor at the program which will need to dynamically load drivers. For example, I removed the four .FMTD formatter drivers from my boot disk. In order to format from Systems Utilities, I placed the cursor at Systems Utilities and hit the return. In the next menu, Item 3 was Extra Drivers. Extra Drivers are drivers which will be loaded dynamically. I keyed in .FMTD1, .FMTD2, .FMTD3 and hit returey just sell it, but no revisions are planned. The manual is not the best, but Appleworks is practically identical (except for the interface to printers) and there are at least four books out on how to use Appleworks. Basically, it is a easy to learn, p" at the same time. You switch between different files with OA-Q almost instantly. The desktop can support about 180K of files on a 256K machine (460K on a 512K machine). The program is distributed by Haba Systems, but not really supported by them. Th of WARNING: when converting a DB file to a SS file, save the intermediate file on a floppy disk. Occasionally, it will hang up in this process and I have a "Directory Damaged" Error on my profile because of this. You can have 12 files on your "desktoot do many calculations on the data, but you can load the DB file into the SS portion and analyze all you want. You can sort on a column in the Spreadsheet. You can put the Spreadsheet in the WP and do search and replaces or reformat or whatever. A wordes not have the variety of edition commands that Word Juggler has. The WP is the portion of 3EZPs that I use the least. The real strength of 3EZPieces is that while the individual components are not the best, they do complement each other. The DB does nthan Advanced VC), but does not have all the functions. I use 3EZP for smaller spreadsheets where formatting and protected fields are not important. The word processor is a "what you see is what you get" type. It is extremely easy to use, although it do using the DB portion of 3EZP. 3EZPs actually has more features that QF and has help screens. The second portion is a spreadsheet. I would class the spreadsheet between Visicalc and Advanced VC in power. It will load Advanced VC datafiles (much faster 2456789mands thruout. For example, Open Apple P (OA-P) is always print or OA-O is print Options for all three individual programs. One part is a database (really a file program) that will support 30 fields. Certain drivers such as .Spool cannot be loaded dynamically. n; my system uses three floppy drives. I hit escape twice, selected item 5 to update. If .Quarkcom and the six .Unused drivers are in SOS.Driver on your boot disk, everything should work. Fine except the moment I needed to name a file it said . So another call to Micro-Sci and they said I needed the new driver version 1.4 and that'll be $20 please. I said "What" and they sent it free. Got the disk by UPS next k. So I called up Micro-sci and they said their driver should work fine. Well it didn't. I then found out that Brock had some sophisticated copy protection and that's why my disks kept running. I said "Oh Well here goes my Master Disk" and added the deviceed I had done something wrong. I called Brock and they said it should work fine but change .d3 to .profile. So I did and Keystroke said this would work once but thats all. Well since I wanted more than one disk and I wanted the full 572 K this wouldn't wor:<=>rst night I read through the manuals and things looked great. I then sat down and made a copy of the Keystroke loader disk and proceeded to add the A-143 device driver to SOS Driver. I then booted the disk only to have the disk run and run and run. Q4. Does anyone know a reliable & cheap way to get an Apple /// repaired? your soldering iron, a match, hair dryer, etc. to shrink the insulation tubing over the exposed wire. You should use a low temperature soldering iron with a fine tip. Never use a soldering gun or you will melt or damage everything in sight when working ing careful to not let the inner wire and shielding short out anywhere. A bit of heat shrinkable insulation on the braided wires prior to installation is a good idea. You can get hear shrink insulation at most electronic supply stores. Use the side ofr into the hole of each pin that you are going to connect a wire to. Then take the wire in one hand, reheat the pin with the other, and insert the wire, holding it steady until the solder cools. Solder the tip of the twisted shielding wires to pin 13, beope like bundle. Strip the insulation from the inner wire for about 1/9 of an inch and solder the center wire to pin 12 of the 15 pin D plug. Soldering will be easier if you gently clamp the plug in a vice, prong side down, and melt a tiny bit of solde Now, carefully strip about one inch off the outermost insulation from the plugless end. Unbraid (a tack or pin is helpful in separating the wires) the braided shielding wires from the inner insulation as far as possible. Now, gently twist them into a r same type of plug found on the back of stereo receivers, cassette decks, etc. Find one with a female socket on one end and a male socket on the other end. Use a wire stripper to cut off the male (pronged) plug out of the cable and throw the plug away. your Apple /// is a 15 pin D-type connector (socket) which is the video port. You will need to find a 15 pin D connector (plug). At your local electronics supply store you should also be able to find a 1 foot long coax audio extension cable. This is the Guide is most of the information you need. The rest of this section will show you how to do this. To connect an NTSC monitor, the general idea is to add a socket similar to the one which you use to hook up your B/W monitor to the ///. On the back ofset. In most cases this may mean packing your CPU into the dealer with your WP program and trying ithe Dynax printer (and probably the Comrex) will fully support printer commands sent from Word Juggler. This includes super- and sub-script, underline, and bold. I have found that "Diablo" compatible means different things to different computer manufs) letter quality printer (the Dynax DX-15) connected to my /// through a 64K Microfazer buffer. I can send 15 pages of text to the buffer in about 1 minute, but it prints for about 20 minutes. ****WORD JUGGLER**** As a digression from the above topic, baud, (0E)). Now check your .PRINTER driver to see if it is: 1)e savings over having it built for about $40, it is getting harder to have one made. With the above information, you can have it made correctly. DRIVER CONFIGURATION The other item you must check before trying to run you Serial printer is that your .PRINnto your newly formated disk and put this disk away. Now you can go into the SCP and rework the various drivers on the copyprotected disk. It is generally a good rule to remove all drivers that you do not need. If you mess up the SOS.DRIVER file, the worst you do is copy it from you backup disk onto the copyprotected disk. SOS.DRIVERS seems to be a source of alot of mystery and consternation. If you have some questions on them, let us know and maybe we can find someone who will write an article on them REPRINTED FROM THE ATUNC NEWSLETTER APRIL 1985 VOL 2 # 4 LITTLE-KNOWN UTILITIES FOR THE SYSTEM UTILITIES: Because the Apple /// manual was not the world's best, several convenient techniques that are available in the System Utilities often go unnoCatalyst. $1000 is a lot of money to pay to use Draw On /// with Catalyst. - Don Norris - ho would want to build a Spread- sheet Model that would take over 20 minutes to load. There are other spreadsheets on other machines which are a lot faster. The only software which appears to benefit from the extra memory is Draw On ///, when used with the 256 K.) It MIGHT work with 512 K when you have several documents on the desk top. The software has never been tested with a 512 K ///, so who knows what will happen. Advanced Version Visicalc is another MIGHT, it has not been tested. Besides that wsor document, which fills up the word processor portion yet does not use up all of the memory in a 256 K Apple ///. However, several questions occured as I reflected upon the possiblities of what use I could make of the extra memory.
