SOS, the Apple /// operating system, was designed with a hard disk in mind. A 5 megabyte hard disk will hold 37 A/// floppies of data as well as access it faster. The price has dropped from $250x or 6.x or Locksmith 6.x require 64K. That is the end of the list of my essentials. You would probably add to the list based on your own specific needs, like an Accounting package or languages, but I think this covers the basics. Now the items tha meaning System Utilities will not make you a backup copy that will work. Copy ][+ Version 4.3 or 4.4, Locksmith Version 5.0, or Essential Data Duplicator (EDD) all work in the 48K Apple ][ emulation mode. The new dot matrix printers with "near letter quality", almost bridge this gap. My preference is for a letter quality for letters and a wide carriage for the dot matrix for spreadsheets. WAP /// SIGWords or numbers also seem to end up on paper. Whether you get a letter quality or a dot matrix will depend on you needs. Sooner or later you will probably get both. The Apple /// can be connected to a video camera, and charts and graphics can be recorded on videotape and replayed at will! That opens up tremendous possibilities for business presentations! You may now hook up most any NTSC monitor, VCR or TV using the same kind of male-male coax cable that you are using to connect your Monitor /// to the B/W video socket. Test the resistance between pins 12 and 13, and all the other pins with a multitester (if you have one) to verify that there are no electrical shorts. Plug the 15-pin D connector into the color video port on the bne tip. Never use a soldering gun or you will melt or damage everything in sight when working with electronic components. Put the plastic shields onto the plug (if you purchased them), and gently lock down the strain relief (if there is one) onto the coax idea. You can get hear shrink insulation at most electronic supply stores. Use the side of your soldering iron, a match, hair dryer, etc. to shrink the insulation tubing over the exposed wire. You should use a low temperature soldering iron with a fi it steady until the solder cools. Solder the tip of the twisted shielding wires to pin 13, being careful to not let the inner wire and shielding short out anywhere. A bit of heat shrinkable insulation on the braided wires prior to installation is a good be easier if you gently clamp the plug in a vice, prong side down, and melt a tiny bit of solder into the hole of each pin that you are going to connect a wire to. Then take the wire in one hand, reheat the pin with the other, and insert the wire, holdinged shielding wires from the inner insulation as far as possible. Now, gently twist them into a rope like bundle. Strip the insulation from the inner wire for about 1/9 of an inch and solder the center wire to pin 12 of the 15 pin D plug. Soldering will Use a wire stripper to cut off the male (pronged) plug out of the cable and throw the plug away. Now, carefully strip about one inch off the outermost insulation from the plugless end. They have a multicolor "checkerboard" that is Black/White in compose to remove the switch, but make the run from port C plug to monitor plug outside the shielded cable. The explanation, "high frequency ground loop" or something like that. I am not sure of the explanation, but I know that the fix works. Now can someonitially, I desoldered the Sync at the monitor plug and patched in a switch that allowed me to turn on the Sync when I was in the RGB mode and turn it off in emulation mode when I wanted to use it for Apple ][ programs in color. My final solution will bconnected, then the Composite color is fine. However, you must have the sync wire connected to run in RGB mode. Simply, the fix is to run the Sync wire outside the shielded cable. The Sync is the white wire in the cable that came with the monitor. Incable plugged into port C on the A/// (unplugging the RGB cable from the monitor did not make a difference). I figured a short in the cable, but my VOM meter said no. Finally, I started desoldering the wires one by one and found that if the Sync is disr in RGB was great. It was sharp, hi-resolution and colorful, but when I switched to the composite mode, the color was almost non-existent.
