In addition VisiCorp laid off 20 percent of their work force. Much of the shift in sales has not been out of the field, but towards integrated packages and away from sta was recently acquired by Gillette which illustrates another trend, the acquisition of independents by larger established corporations. Business software seems to be having its own difficulties. VisiCorp recently announced significant me problems. Going hand in hand with the slowing of game sales, is an increase in the number of small independent software producers experiencing financial difficulties. Many are reported to be in serious trouble. One example is Datasoft whoth the hardware and software side of the industry. Everyone is aware of the recent demise in the low end market of the TI 44 as well as Mattel's, and Timex's entries, but the software side of the business seems to be experiencing the sandications of many of the recent changes in the Computer Industry. MICROCOMPUTER TRENDS AND HAPPENINGS: With the recent visit of the major spring shows to the Chicago area many of us had an opportunity to see for ourselves ion: The consolidation routines of Multiplan are a major selling point to people that often already have other spreadsheet programs. It can easily combine parts of several separate spreadsheets and provide consolidated reports. Those of you the column/row numbers are not available. The first issue was datndalone spreadsheet, word processing, and data base programs. Sales of word processing software is down this year over 1983 about 3 percent, Data Base down 2 percent, and spreadsheets are down a whopping 12.5 percent; filling the sales gap are integrated systems (moved from zero last year to 10.7 percent of the total market this year). Even more impressive is its ability to write output files in DIF formats (for VisiCalc). Once entered or read, data can be easily manipulated and reported in many user defined formats. It was designed to take files from VisiCalc, Apple Writer, and Qfine 'keystrokes' to do several items automatically...this is very similar to the Advanced VisiCalc keystroke memory sequences. The Manuals were available for review and are pro- fessionally done and very well planned. The help athe demonstration was much smaller but the sort time was very short.
