It refers to the columns of text going across your screen, but the switch does absolutely nothing. The "80/40" column switch is a gigantic "oops" in the design of the IIc. Sitting beside the "80/408K) of memory. You could expand this up to one megabyte of memory, but very few persons choose to do so. Don't be confused about 128K being a small amount of memory. Sure the Mac's all have one, two, three, and eight megabytes of memory. But all th thing, or less expensive joysticks with less desirable features. The Mach II is a fine product at a good price. Oh, by the way, you might be interested in knowing how much memory your IIc comes with. All IIc's ever built come with 128 kilobytes (12 nifty though. The Laser mouse is a good substitute for the Apple mouse. If you decide to get a joystick, the best one for your money is the Mach II, by CH Products. The price runs at about $27. You can buy more expensive joysticks that do the samek, modem, or printer, find the appropriate icon on the back panel. The joystick connection, or "game port," can also be used for plugging in a mouse. Far more programs on the IIc use joystick than mice. MousePaint, a color painting program, is prettys been known to fall off with vigorous treatment, causing the drive to be virtually inoperative. Hooking up an external drive is as easy as finding the floppy disk icon (picture) on the back panel of the IIc. Likewise, if you need to hook up a joysticall you really need is the IIc's built-in 5.25 inch drive. If you do decide to get an external drive, the Laser drive, at $95, is the best deal. It's pretty reliable too, except be careful about opening and closing the disk drive latch. The latch hations such as AppleWorks. Typically you put the application program into the IIc's built-in drive, and your formatted data disk into the external drive. But don't go rushing out to buy a second drive if you don't need one. If you have simple needs, 3.5 inch drives. Most people buy the 5.25 inch external drive, if they buy any drive at all. What's the big deal about getting a second drive? A second drive makes it more convenient to make back-up disks, and makes it more convenient to use applica As the old saying goes, an ounce of knowledge is worth a pound of diagnostic repairs. Which brings us to the subject of external disk drives. You can plug in two types of external disk drives into your IIc: regular 5.25 inch drives, and small-sized omputer away from the annoying reflections caused by direct sunlight.) One common (but easily corrected) annoyance is curved lines running across middle of your screen. Simply adjust the knobs on the back of the monitor and the curved lines go away. tness on your monitor. (This dial may be on the right side of later Apple IIc monitors.) In a room with varying amounts of daytime sunlight, you might like to adjust the brightness of the monitor accordingly. (Generally speaking, it's best to place your crograms, although many programs allow you to choose to have the sound switched off. But it's also nice to have the sound turned down, but not entirely off. Moving up to the left side of your monitor, you'll find another dial for controlling the brighhe standard QWERTY layout, leave the "keyboard" key in the up position. Moving from the ridiculous to the sublime, you'll note the volume control dial on the underside of the left side of the keyboard. The volume control dial is very handy for noisy p" switch is the "keyboard" switch, an equally useless switch. By pressing down this switch, your IIc keyboard gets automatically rearranged (internally) to the Dvorak keyboard layout. Unless you're in the mood to learn an entirely different layout from te Mac programs are memory hogs. As my mother used to say, "128K of memory is plenty for a boy like you." You can fit up to twenty-five typed, double-spaced pages into 128K. Unless you're writing a big fat novel, you're not going to run out of memory in your word processor. From a historical perspective, 128K is gigantic, considering that the original Apple II's were sold with 16K of memory, the old II+'s came with 48K, and the earlier Apple IIe's came standard with 64K of memory. Which typesnovation still thrives in the hearts of software developers. With faster CPU's, and larger, faster mass storage devices, dozens of new applications are just beginning to be explored. And new applications are still being churned out for tried-and-true tec ood idea and start a company in 1990 as it was in 1957, when Noyce founded Intel. Yet the pronouncement that his death marks the end of an era is greatly exaggerated. True, the hardware pioneers are quickly becoming a dying breed, but the spirit of in Robert Noyce: Innovator and Visionary The passing of Robert Noyce (in May, 1990), co-inventor of the semiconductor chip, brought forth profound declarations in the press that his death marked the end of an era. It's much more difficult to take a geaches computers in elementary school.) ol.) ould have you believe otherwise, but the IIc can even be used to run a small business.) Find out what old-time IIc users like, and you'll be off to a good start. Phil Shapiro (The author develops educational and productivity software on a IIc, and tsed, what types of software run on the IIc? Take a look at any copy of inCider/A+ magazine (or any of the old A+ magazines). The IIc runs thousands and thousands of different programs, from educational to business to entertainment. (The folks at Apple wr disks also go by the name of "800K disks." (By the way, you can't notch the back side of the 3.5 inch disks because the 3.5 inch disk drive automatically uses both sides of the disk.) So what is your IIc capable of, you might ask? Or, properly phraes the chances of getting dust into your drive (and thus harming the drives). You can fit about sixty typed pages of text on a formatted 5.25 inch data disk. The smaller 3.5 inch disks, strangely enough, hold about five times as much data. The smalledisk notcher" is a hole punching device that doubles your storage space by allowing you to use the back side of the disk. A small minority of people, most of them close relatives of floppy disk manufactures, claim that using the back side of disks increasmputers, easily distinguishable by their very high price. You don't need to buy brand name floppies, as the generic ones work just as well. You can save a lot of money by buying blank floppies in the mail. Prices go as low as 20 cents per disk. A " of blank floppy disks should you get? You can use just about any 5.25 inch floppy disks in your drive(s). Single-sided, single-density; double-sided, double-density; they all work the same. Just don't get the "high-density" 5.25 inch disks for other cohnologies, such as the venerable Apple II. Truth is, the astounding capabilities of the Apple II are still being revealed anew on a month by month basis. It's not so surprising that the Apple II's capabilities have not been fully explored. Consider that the early days of the Apple II were marked by hobbyists and amateurs. They created some nifty software, but they were doing it just for the fun of it. Up until 1980, the software scene was dominated by the proverbial weekend hacker. And then b or Apple //. The idea presented here is an interesting one, which you may find useful. Remember, your Apple /// is still a wonderfull machine that is a tool you can use for years to come IF you don't worry about it having all the latest bells and whistlory file. From there, add the formatted files you wish to make up your book. You can name them by chapters or by specific names depending on how you wish to put the "book" together. Beyond that, the USE of this disk is the same whether Apple ///Maker and the Diskname.Dat file. Be sure to change Diskname.Dat to the name of your Floppy Book. You can rename Menu.Maker to "Hello" if you wish or you can create your own "Hello" program like the one on this disk that loads a graphic as an introductneed. Be aware that you may have to change some pathnames in PD.CON so it can work with your system. Knowledge of WPL would be helpful. To make your own Apple /// version of a "Floppy Book", copy the three SOS files from this disk to your disk, Menu.ess and "P". Then type "DO .d1/PD.Con" and it will take things from there (after asking you the ASCII file you wish to convert - be sure to give it the complete pathname, i.e.: .D1/Myfile). We've also included the other AppleWriter files you'll ed in AppleWriter to properly format each file so it would be read correctly by Menu.Maker. PD.Con (Public Domain Conversion Program) is included on Side Two for your use with AppleWriter. It's a WPL (Word Processing Language) Program. To use it, Prng on the desires of the user. In converting this disk from its Apple // original, we loaded the AppleWorks Word Processing files into Three EZ Pieces and then "Printed" them to disk, creating an ASCII text file. A WPL program called "PD.CON" was then us ve been made. Enjoy! joy! face doesn't offer great potential. It does. But so too does the untested capabilities of established technologies, such as the Apple II. We have just begun to find out what this great creature can do. y 1984, Apple II software developers started eyeing the newer, faster systems that were coming out. Many developers quickly jumped ship. Everyone hopped onto the graphical user interface bandwagon. Which is not to say that the graphical user interes! More Nitty Gritty By Phil Shapiro (Edited for the Apple /// version of Floppy Book) What are some possible applications for a floppy book? Well, you could create an inexpensive newsletter for a small Apple II (or ///?) users group. 5.25 inch floppy disks can be bought for as little as 25 cents each (in lots of 25 from Computer Direct, 800-289-9473). So for the price of five photocopies, you can distribute over 100 pages of typed text. (Not that anyone would submit a 50 page articleas been that the game is far more fun played cooperatively under the "one player" option. Cross Country USA is an ideal game for the family to play together, assuming children are appropriately aged (about fourth grade on up), and are sufficiently compati too many commodities to pick up, you risk missing out on these neat rewards. Another important choice at the options menu is how many players will be playing the game. While the program allows for two players to play competitively, my experience hbout ten to fifteen minutes to pick up each commodity. You'll probably want to only pick up two or three commodities when you first start playing this game. There's some nice graphics rewards at the end, when you deliver your final goods; so if you chooseer. Phil Shapiro By the way, I'm putting together a 3.5 inch version of Floppy Book 1, which will run under the Beagle Compiler, and will also contain copies of the JoyReader and Large-Text JoyReader shareware disks. een. It also works well for the visually impaired. 4) Language Arts Treasures - contains a very nice spelling drill, keyboarding drill, and high school vocabulary drill. Well, I've been rambling on a bit here, so I'll bid ye farewell. Go, enjoy, conquthe speed of display. About 12 reading selections on the disk. You can't import your own reading passages into the program, though. 3) Large-Text JoyReader - A used-controlled reading program for beginning readers. It produces a nice big font on the scrFun - simple text display programs. Good for someone wanting to learn BASIC. This disk was my first attempts at programming (and it shows!). 2) JoyReader - A user-controlled speed reading program. You can use a joystick, paddles, or keyboard to control ty gritty details? Oh yes, if you liked this disk, you might enjoy a couple of other (Apple //) disks I've created. You can get them from many users groups and other nice people. The first three are shareware, the last one is public domain. 1) Reading ld have a series of menus that could only be accessed after reading and understanding a certain part of the adventure. To create such a disk, you would have to do some major modifications to the current menu programs. Did I forget any of the nitd about good Apple II software (by making copies of the catalog) (NOTE: Daryl Anderson of D.A.Datasystems, an early Apple /// developer, did this). A third possible application for a floppy book might be to create a text-based adventure game. You cous for a floppy book might be to create a software catalog for a new software publishing company. By distributing the catalog on a floppy disk, such a company could minimize printing expenses, while harnessing the goodwill of Apple users to spread the wor Timeout Superfonts, by Beagle Bros. These days there are some elegant looking, very readable 36 point fonts available for Superfonts. (Most of these large fonts have been converted over into GS-font format from the Mac.) Another possible application to a small user group newsletter, but it's nice to know that you are not constrained by length limits.) One lesser-considered advantage to such a newsletter is that people with visual impairments could print out the articles using a large font fromble with each other to work towards a common goal. The division of labor in such a cooperative enterprise would have one child sitting at the keyboard, "driving the truck," and another child poring over the map, acting as "navigator." Parents can t
