No sacrifice of Apple /// color is involved in the use of an NTSC monitor because the Apple /// hi-res color mode is identical to the corresponding Apple // mode. If you have a newer Apple ///, yo is the way to go. Unfortunately, composite color does not have the quality RGB has, but George Oetzel, writing in On Three a few years back feels : An NTSC monitor and a B/W monitor together cost less than a good RGB monitor, and it seems get an RF modulator and hook it between your /// and a regular TV). One additional plus is that you can get color out of emulation mode with this hookup (RGB is NOT available). In fact, if all you want to do is play games in Em mode, compositet means you can directly send the output of your /// into a VCR and from there into your TV set. It's a cheap way to get color and be able to tape the output as well. Of course, you can also plug your /// directly into a composite monitor if you wish (oritor. The first is called NTSC composite. The second is called RGB. There are monitors that offer each separately or together (hold on though, it's not as easy as it seems). The NTSC signal is the same type used by your video tape recorder. Tha plug in (SUN has them I believe). COLOR MONITORS AND THE APPLE /// This has always been a subject of great interest to /// users, so l'll spend a couple of columns on it. First off, your Apple /// produces two types of color for output to a monnother way is to simply pick up a used /// and swap out the keyboard. Note that there is a difference between a /// and ///+ keyboard, so if you want to put a ///+ keyboard into a /// or vice-versa, you'll need to make sure you have the proper ROM chip tolacement keyboard, you can try Sun Remarketing (1-800-821-3221). They sell them for $75.00. Or you could try one of the parts houses I've mentioned in the past (see the back of Computer Shopper) like Shreve Systems or Pre-Owned Electronics. Of course, ahip puller to remove the specific keys that are giving you trouble and clean extra well around them. 9 times out of 10, this will take care of keyboard problems. This is not unusual if you have been pounding on it for some time. If you need a repmember Ed Gooding suggests your trouble-shooting begins by taking off the keyboard.
